Mumbai:

will it be a cakewalk? Rohit Shetty and Ajay Devgan

Ajay Devgan's next production, a Rohit Shetty comedy, is based on Hindi play, Uncle Samjha Karo

Ajay Devgan's next production venture directed by buddy Rohit Shetty is based on the Hindi play Uncle Samjha Karo which was staged five years ago in the city.

As reported, 'Serious No More' (Hitlist, December 27), the comic caper stars Ajay Devgan along with Sanjay Dutt and Fardeen Khan. The female cast has yet to be decided.

Kahaani kya hai?

The subject deals with mistaken identities and hilarious goof-ups as in the drama. Sanjay plays doting big brother to his good-for nothing sibling Fardeen Khan who depends upon him for survival.

Devgan essays the role of Fardeen's friend whose wife is mistaken to be Fardeen's better half! He happens to be visiting Fardeen when Dutt suddenly decides to check on the younger brother to find a woman in the house.

Says a source, "The film is slated to roll in March and will be shot mostly in Goa a location Shetty considers lucky as he filmed his Golmaals there."

Where's the title?

Incidentally, this script has been with Devgan for quite a while. In October 2007, there was a buzz that Kumar Mangat would produce the film. At that time, Mangat had claimed that the film was loosely inspired by the play.

It was to be called Pocket Money and the title had also been registered. But now Devgan and Shetty have not finalised a title for it.

Paritosh Painter and Balwinder Singh Suri who penned and directed the play are on board with Devgan's team of writers, which include Robin Bhatt, Yunus Sajawat and Farhad Sajid for the film's story-screenplay.

It is also learnt that the rights of the script were initially with Keshu Ramsay, who wanted to cast his son Aryeman in the film but the project failed to take off.

What was Uncle Samjha Karo?

It opened in November 2003 and had a jobless bachelor living off his rich uncle. For the film, they have substituted the uncle for the elder brother.

The play's cast included Vrajesh Hirjee, Darshan Jariwalla and Balwinder Singh Suri besides telly actors Manav Gohil and Shweta Kawatra. Uncle Samjha Karo was the Hindi version of Dinyar Contractor's English play Whose Wife Is It Anyway? that was staged over a decade ago.
