Balconies of flats at a Rohini residential complex collapsed due to heavy rain

The rains brought many woes for the residents of the Ganga Triveni Apartment at Sector-9 in Rohini. Portions of balconies of three to four flats of the complex, which had developed cracks, collapsed during the heavy downpour.

"It was a harrowing time. Parts of balconies in three flats collapsed at midnight after hours of heavy rain. It sounded like a bomb blast," Dr Sanjay Dhingra, a resident of the complex.

Residents alleged that poor maintenance and low-quality construction material were responsible for the incident. "It is the responsibility of the management committee of the complex to maintain the buildings from the outside. But despite visible cracks, the management did not repair the damaged portions. Fortunately, the incident took place at night when no one was present under the balconies. Otherwise, there would have been casualties," added Dhingra.

Following the incident, residents called the PCR. "A major disaster is waiting to happen here. This incident should be an eye-opener," said Dhingra.
