If an ambitious proposal by the Railway Protection Force (RPF) of the Central and Western Railway is implemented, every suburban railway station will begin to resemble the Hollywood flick 'The Truman Show'.

The plan is to set up 13,000 Wi-Fi cameras and 8,000 TV screens inside all coaches and stations of CR and WR.

Every coach will have at least four cameras and TV screens, which will display advertisements and useful information. The CCTV cameras installed at the stations will be integrated with the system.

The grand project, costing around Rs 650 crore, is expected to be executed on a BOOT (Build-Own-Operate-Transfer) model.

The idea to implement a surveillance project came to life after RPF director general Ranjit Sinha, who was in the city a few days ago, asked senior RPF officials of the Central and Western Railways to present a comprehensive security plan, which included installation of Wi-Fi cameras in the trains.

"A person can place anything inside the train and get away. The utility of the cameras (see box) have been proved by the reduction and detection in certain crimes. With the installation of the wi-fi cameras inside the trains, anything happening in the trains can be monitored. Besides, the same can be broadcast on the television screens, when there is an emergency," said a railway official.

What are Wi-Fi cameras?
Wireless security cameras are a combination of three components: a camera, a transmitter to send the signal, and a receiver to receive the signal. A wireless camera transmits video from a u00a0u00a0built-in transmitter to a receiver, which is in turn plugged into either a monitor or other recording device.
