POLICE in Devarajeevanahalli busted a fake currency racket and arrested a 14-year-old boy from Bihar who is part of the group.

Acting on a tip-off, beat police intercepted a gang of four at Modi Road and managed to catch two of them, Mushtaq, 25, and Mohammed Wazir, 14, while two others, Raheel and Rahmatulla, managed to escape. The police recovered fake 500-rupee notes from them on the spot, and later raided the rented house of the accused and confiscated fake currency worth Rs 10 lakh, all in the denomination of Rs 500.

According to the police, the gang members are from Motihari district of Bihar and had come to the city a few months ago for menial jobs. But their real mission was to pump fake currency sourced from a gang in Bihar into the Bangalore market on a commission basis, they confessed.

However, the police are not buying their story and said that they suspected the gang to be part of a bigger syndicate involved in inter-state operations. Police said that they suspect the gang has more members and may have a reach across the city.

Boy racketeer

"It's for the first time that we have stumbled upon minor boys being used for fake currency rackets," said a senior police officer investigating the case. The boy was used since shopkeepers and owners of commercial establishments were unlikely to suspect him.

One of the police officers recalled a similar incident in Shivajinagar some years back, where a gang used minors to peddle drugs and deliver consignments to customers. He added that it was also common for sex workers in and around bus stands and railway stations to use street children as pimps to get clients.
