In yet another shocking case of human trafficking, the teenager was sexually assaulted and raped multiple times for three months in the city and Hyderabad. Her case came to light after she escaped the clutches from her tormentors at Secunderabad railway station, and met a woman from Mumbai. The girl was brought to the city and taken to NGO Nari Samman Sanghatana, which in turn handed her over to the DN Nagar police station.
The girl, a native of Kolkata, came to Mumbai in July after her boyfriend called her here on the pretext of marrying her. He also threatened that if she did not come, he would kill himself by jumping in front of a train. After she agreed, the boyfriend, identified as Maarudas, asked his friend Haider Shaikh to go to Kolkata to escort her here.
The girl’s boyfriend and Shaikh resided in the same village in Murshidabad district. “After arriving in Mumbai, he kept calling me to come over. I did not want to initially leave my village, but after he repeatedly insisted, I decided to be with him,” she told MiD DAY. “I never knew he had other plans. I trusted him and ran away from my home and arrived in Kalyan,” the girl said.
When she came to Mumbai, Shaikh took her to Maarudas’s shanty in Kalyan, where Maarudas allegedly raped her five times. “He kept saying he would marry me, but he never did anything of the sort. And then one day, he took me to a hotel,” she said.
“Shaikh and Maarudas took the girl to a hotel in Ulhasnagar, where she was kept for 17 days. She was raped and tortured in the hotel room,” said a policeman on condition of anonymity.
“I didn’t know why I was brought to the hotel until this one man came to the room. He beat me and tied me to the bed and then raped me. After that day, many men kept coming and abusing me. I was locked up in the hotel room and was only allowed to use the bathroom under supervision of hotel employees,” the girl said.
“After 17 days, she was handed over to a woman called Sonali, who took her to Hyderabad,” said the policeman. “When I asked Maarudas and Shaikh where I was being taken, they told me that I was sold to a businessman in Hyderabad for a month and that I will have to go with his friend,” shesaid.
A few days later, Sonali escorted her to Ellore in Hyderabad, where she was again sold. “I was again kept in a hotel in Hyderabad and was again tortured and raped by many men for almost 15 days,” the girl said.
After 15 days in Hyderabad, the girl was being brought back to Kalyan when she mustered courage and jumped off at Secundarabad railway station.
“I was in the ladies compartment and Shaikh was in an another bogie. I took a chance and jumped off onto the platform, as the train gathered pace. I was praying he didn’t notice it,” said the girl. When the girl was sitting at the platform crying, a woman noticed her and asked her about her story. “I told the woman about my plight and she brought me to Mumbai where I was introduced to this NGO, who helped me file a police report,” she said.
A case was registered at DN Nagar police station and cops are now hunting for the two accused. “The girl is in a state of shock as she has undergone trauma. She does not remember her family’s phone numbers and other details. On the basis of the complaint filed by the girl, we registered the offence on Friday but will transfer the FIR to Kalyan police,” said the police officer investigating the case.
“I begged all the men who raped me, but no one helped me. I belong to a poor family and don’t know how I will return to my village. I want Maarudas, Shaikh and the others to be arrested so that innocent girls don’t have to undergo the same torture,” said the girl.
