18 till I die

Who's going to sign a man who's got two flops back to back? This is the acid test for me!" says Rohit Roy who is now going to be seen in two films, Mittal vs Mittal and Apartment. Excitement wars with trepidation in Rohit as he tells CS about the three loves of his lifeu00a0-- cinema, wife Mansi and daughter Kiara:

WHO: Rohit Roy
WHAT: Talking about his film career
WHERE: At his Oshiwara office

Two real
Mittal vs Mittal was not something I was sure of taking up. When I met Karan Johar and he narrated the script to me, I got cold feet. But he was confident and I trusted him. I feel strongly for the message that the film is trying to drive home. Marital rape and domestic abuse are extremely topical issues and unless women speak up, abusers will keep going scot-free. Jags (Jagmohan Mundhra) was making a film called Sonia based on the Gandhi family some time back. Sanjay Gandhi is one historical character that I identify most with. But the film didn't happen. Then he called me for Apartment. He really is a cool guy to worku00a0-- he never lost his calm, even when we goofed up.

Timeless
Even after 13 years, I'm offered roles in the same age bracket. Looks like I haven't aged at all! And although I haven't yet received the kind of adulation I could have or should have, I'm still happy. I got success very early, but was never serious about acting itself. In 2001, after my daughter Kiara was born, I realised that every minute of my work henceforth would have to face her judgement. The first serial I signed after she was born was Kkusum. And that really was the first time I put a real effort into my skills as an actor. My wife Mansi has studied the art of acting and also has a theatre background totally unlike me who's driven by gut instinct. Her critique gets me thinking. Thank God, I have a sounding board in my bedroom!

Calling the shots

Over the last couple of years, I've come to understand the medium of films much better. When you do television for a long time, your vision becomes a little myopicu00a0-- you tend to see only 21 inches. Then I met Sanjay Gupta, who's been a great influence. I shot Plan with him and realised that he is somebody who breathes cinema. Then of course, I directed Rice Plate and that really widened my visual sensibilities. I am now working on directing two films -- an action-comedy for Sanjay Gupta and a romantic love story for Balaji Telefilms. I want to become a successful actor-directoru00a0-- like Woody Allen.
