Au00a0newborn girl died when she was thrown off the second floor of a building in Thergaon near Hinjewadi on Saturday night, allegedly by her 19-year-old mother.

The police believe the woman wanted to cover up her illicit relationship with a Latur-based youth as he had died a few days ago.

Laxmi Bharat Ingle of Latur was booked for murder by the Hinjewadi police after the incident was reported by Somnath Mandlik (30), a resident of the locality who was standing where the baby fell.

The police said Laxmi was doing a DEd course in a college in Thergaon. She had an affair with a person from her village who died in an accident some days ago.

Laxmi, who was staying in a rented flat in a two-storey building, was seven months pregnant and delivered on Saturday evening around 7 pm.

She threw her newborn from the second floor, and the infant fell into the bathroom of a house nearby, where Mandlik was standing.

In the meantime, Laxmi's brother reached her place to give her some money. Mistaking him for her boyfriend, angry residents beat him up, said the police.

Laxmi was admitted to the Yashwantrao Chavan Memorial Hospital.

Police sub-inspector A. S. Wanjari is investigating the case.
