22-year-old 'shopaholic' held with fake notes

A 22-year-old has been arrested for distributing fake Rs 1,000 currency notes in Bandra.


The school dropout was distributing the money manufactured in Bangladesh to shop owners in Bandra.

The entire incident came to the authorities’ notice when an alert shopkeeper noticed Akbar Nizamuddin Sheikh buying expensive items at the Bandra market. When Sheikh handed him a 1,000-rupee note, he immediately spotted that it was counterfeit and notified the cops.

“A team from Bandra police station rushed to the spot and arrested Sheikh handing the note. He was arrested and produced in Bandra court that remanded him to police custody,” said API Nandkumar Gaikwad of Bandra police station.

According to the police, the accused is a resident of Chunabhatti in Kolkata and used to travel to the city every 15 days and distribute the notes. The police said that the accused would take fake notes from the Bangladesh border and then bring it to the city and would be awarded handsomely for circulating the fake currency. The authorities are now searching for the mastermind behind the entire racket.

Pratap Dighavakar, DCP (Zone IX) said, “We have arrested Sheikh under Section 489 [b] [c] (Possession of forged or counterfeit currency-notes or bank-notes). We have also seized fake notes worth Rs 7,000 from the accused.”
