Thane: At least four persons lost their lives in rain-related incidents in the district which was pounded by heavy showers, even as debris clearing operation was in Bhiwandi where a building collapsed yesterday killing nine persons.


A 26-year-old man drowned in Mahuli waterfall at Sahapur in the district yesterday. The body was later fished out and sent for postmortem, district disaster management officer Asmita Nikam said.

Besides, three youths, who had gone for a swim in Tansa river at Dhakivali on Wada Bhiwandi road, were swept away in the water yesterday. The bodies of the three youths, identified as Baban Madvi, Vilas Joshi and Devidas Pati, were yet to be recovered, Nikam said.

According to police, the youths were from Airoli in Navi Mumbai and had gone to Wada for a picnic. Meanwhile, the operation to clear the debris of the collapsed building in Bhiwandi's Gaibi Nagar continued today with the help of a NDRF team.

The Shanti Nagar police have registered offences in connection with incident. The rescue team fears some persons might still be trapped under the debris and things will be clear once the entire operation is completed.

Nine persons, including a mother and her four sons, were killed in the building collapse yesterday. District Collector Dr Mahendra Kalyankar said out of the total 22 injured in the mishap, 16 people were being treated at Indira Gandhi Memorial Hospital in Bhiwandi. The others were treated and discharged by late last night.

Thane city recorded a whopping 286 mm rainfall yesterday, Thane Municipal Corporation's regional disaster management cell chief Santosh Kadam said. The maximum rainfall recorded in the city during previous years was - 163.60 mm (Aug 30, 2010), 252.50 mm (July 29, 2011), 264 mm (Sep 3, 2012), 315 mm (Jun 9, 2013), 176 mm (Jul 29, 2014) and 179.5 mm (Jun 18, 2015), he said.

Besides, the city has so far received a total 2,251 mm rainfall during the season till this morning, as against 1,557 mm during the same period last year, he said. The Mumbai-Ahmedabad highway was flooded near Kinara Dhaba and traffic movement was affected for hours last night, Palghar rural police control said.

In Thane city, the authorities got several calls of flooding, tree fall, wall collapse etc. Mayor Sanjay More said the flooding on Ghodbunder Road near Hiranandani Estate was due to faulty construction of water discharge pipeline and he would take up the issue with the MSRDC.
