400 years of Shakespeare

As reported earlier, next week will see the legendary English actor Sir Ian McKellen, in Mumbai as part of programme put together by the British Council and others to celebrate Shakespeare's 400 years after his death.

McKellen is an Academy award nominated actor and a recipient of six Laurence Olivier Awards, a Tony Award, a Golden Globe Award, a Screen Actors Guild Award. The actor is the global ambassador of Shakespeare and some of his most well-known film roles include Gandalf in 'The Lord of the Rings' and Magneto in the 'X-Men' films.

The actor will be in conversation with Aamir Khan, next week for what is anticipated to be a thrilling discussion on the arts at the NCPA. We are informed that McKellen will also unveil a new programme titled 'Shakespeare on Film' during his time here. And given the personalities involved — no surprises that this is the hottest ticket in town.

The Gayle storm
Is there anything Chris Gayle, the West Indian cricket icon cannot do? The legend, who recently became a father to a baby girl named Blush was seen to be in great form, both on and off the pitch earlier this week. The occasion was the IPL match in Kolkata, that saw Gayle's Bangalore team face of against SRK's team.

Bangalore won the match quite resoundingly, and the victory was steered by Gayle, who hit four sixes and five fours before getting out for 49. After the victory, the team headed for a celebration party where Gayle once again was the star of the show as he decided to be the DJ for the night.

And if a party with SRK, Parineeti Chopra and Gayle as DJ is not glamorous enough, we're informed the Gayle storm was accompanied by singer Kanika Kapoor, who also happened to be in Kolkata to attend the match. The two are said to have put on quite a show for onlookers as they danced to Kanika's famous track, Chittiya Kaliyan! Who said IPL had lost its glamour quotient?

India on her sleeve
We spoke to the newly married, young fashion designer, Masaba Gupta, known for her quirky designs and youth appeal. We were informed that she was busy gearing up to attend the Cannes Film Festival with her husband, producer Madhu Mantena whose upcoming thriller, Raman Raghav 2.0, will be premiered at the festival.

The film has been directed by filmmaker Anurag Kashyap, and features the critically acclaimed Nawazuddin Siddiqui playing a serial killer. And though Masaba will miss out on walking the ubiquitous red carpet that has come to define what was once a premier film festival, we are informed that she has put a lot of thought into her outfit opting to wear her own design (paired with Misho jewellery and Louboutin shoes).

“Given that I wasn't walking the red carpet, I wanted to make sure I wore something easy, so the cape felt like the best silhouette to go with. Wearing one of my chaap Tilak print was only obvious because you have to see the kind of awe people abroad look at an Indian design with,” she said, adding, “And it is my culture, so I flaunted it.”

Zizou in Mumbai?
French football legend, and World Cup winning player Zinedine Zidane, now has an Indian connection: he has been signed up by the Kanakia Real Estate Group to be the brand ambassador of their upcoming project, Kanakia Paris in BKC. We are informed that the deal had been in the pipeline for quite a while and was spearheaded by the scion of the Kanakia group, Ashish Kanakia who is a football fan.

But Indian fans of the footballer, affectionately called Zizou, will have to wait a bit longer as his current role as manager of the Spanish football club Real Madrid is keeping him busy preparing the team for the upcoming final match of the Champion's League at the end of the month.

But street hoardings featuring the international legend are up already in Mumbai and a video has now been released by the group on their social media feed, showing Zidane announcing the deal. Incidentally, after Lionel Messi was signed by the Tata Group as brand ambassador, this is the second big Indian deal with an International footballer. Looks like our cricketers finally have some competition.

Mind the gap
Currently back in Mumbai, Devanushi and Anoop Mehta's daughter, Dia Mehta Bhupal, is making strides in the avant-garde photography space in India.

Dia who holds a Bachelor in Fine Arts degree from the Parsons School of Design, had married Krishna Bhupal, one of the scions of the Hyderabad-based GVK Group, in glittering ceremony in 2010, which saw the who's who from the business and glamour world in attendance. The likes of AR Rahman, Sonu Nigam, Sivamani and Louis Banks had performed for it in Mumbai and Hyderabad.

Now sources say the young artist is back from her debut solo exhibition, 'Mind the gap' which was showcased last month at the Gallery SKE in Delhi and has many exciting upcoming projects including photographs for brands. Nice!
