5 killed, 1 hurt in 2 separate accidents

Five persons were killed — three of the same family — and one was critically injured in two separate road accidents yesterday.

The first accident occurred when a car, with a family of four, overturned due to a tyre burst at Varkute village near Indapur on the Pune-Solapur Highway, while the second incident, wherein two bikers collided with a bus and lost their lives, took place on the Pune-Mumbai Highway near Valwan village, near Lonavla.

First accident
In the first incident, a pilgrimage trip to their hometown in Usmanabad district turned tragic for a city professor teaching at Fergusson College and his two sons, as their car met with an accident at 10.30 am.

Police said that the accident took place after the car’s tyre burst and the vehicle toppled several times, causing the deaths. The professor’s wife sustained serious injuries in the accident, and is undergoing treatment at a private hospital.

The deceased professor Mahendra Waghmare (45), and his two sons — Aditya (16) and Kaustubh (12) — were residents of Janwadi in Pune. The injured wife has been identified as Anuradha. Waghmare was employed at the college as a mathematics professor and was residing in the city with his two sons and wife.

On Wednesday morning, the family left for Kalamb in their car, their hometown, as they were supposed to attend a fair at the village. “When they were on the way, their car’s tyre suddenly burst and due to this Waghmare, who was driving, lost control of the car and the vehicle car toppled several times before coming to a halt in a roadside ditch,” said police inspector Ashok Pawar of Indapur police station.

He said Waghmare and his two sons died on the spot and his wife sustained serious injuries. Waghmare was working at Ferguson College for 17 years and his elder son Aditya had recently given his Std X examinations, while the youngest studied in Std VI.

Police said that Waghmare’s wife works as a clerk at a military canteen in the city. “Prima-facie, it looks like the tyre burst due to the heat, and because of the speed at which the vehicle was travelling, the car may have toppled several times, leading to the deaths,” said Pawar.

Second accident
In the second tragic case, two students studying business management at Kohinoor Management Institute, Khandala, died after their motorcycle collided head-on with a State Transport bus at 9.30 am.

Police said that the duo were on their way to appear for their examination, when the incident occurred. The deceased have been identified as Raunak Nambiar (22), a resident of Yerawada and Devrat Kalar (20), a resident of Borivali in Mumbai.

According to the police, Raunak used to work at the front desk of Pune Marriot. Police have arrested the ST driver Tabaji Rambhau Ghode and charged him with rash and negligent driving.

The accident took place on the road between Muneer Hotel and Centre Point Hotel in Lonavla. It may be recalled that two motorcycle-borne youths had recently died at the same stretch in a road accident.

The stretch has seen three such accidents during the past four months, which has claimed over six lives and left several injured. Around 20 fatalities have been reported on this road stretch in the past three years.u00a0
