Deceased claims in suicide note that Harshi Mandal sold her flat, but refused to give her the money he obtained from the sale

A 50-year-old woman committed suicide by hanging herself from the ceiling of her rented apartment in Malad (West) on Tuesday.

The police found a suicide note in the apartment, in which the deceased blamed Harshi Mandal as the person responsible for her drastic step.

Leena Gibson (50), was a tenant of flat no 103 at the Kingston Classique building located in Chincholi Bunder, Malad (West). The body was discovered around 11 pm, after Gibson's daughter called the police.

Preliminary investigations have revealed that Gibson, who earlier worked as a beautician, had been divorced for the past 20 years. Her daughter had moved to her private apartment at Yari Road, Andheri, four years ago.

Gibson, though in touch with her daughter, stayed alone.

"Gibson's daughter made repeated attempts to call her yesterday, but she did not answer. Late in the evening, she reached Gibson's residence and knocked repeatedly.

When her mother failed to open the door to let her in, she immediately informed the police," said police Sub Inspector Mahesh Nivatkar of the Malad police station.

"We reached the spot and called the fire brigade. We broke down the door, and on entering the apartment, found Gibson hanging from the ceiling," he added.

Cheated
The police added that Gibson previously owned a flat in Seven Bungalows, Versova, which she had sold off a few months back. It was only then that she started staying at the rented apartment in Malad.

The suicide note revealed that a certain Harshi Mandal had legally sold her flat with her consent, but had retained the money that was due to her from the sale.

"The woman was suffering from severe depression, as Mandal was withholding the money, in spite of her repeated requests.

The deceased has mentioned in her suicide note that Mandal's extortionate activities had led her to take her own life," said Avinash Jadhav, senior police inspector of Malad police station.

The police have registered a case against Mandal for abetment of suicide, and are trying to track him down.
