For 55-odd students from Solapur's Khwaja Bande Nawaz Urdu High School, there could not have been a worst day. These students of standard X were all set to write their first paper for the SSC examinations, but were refused permission to appear for the exams. What's worst, they were debarred for no fault of theirs.

Ujjwaladevi Patil, chairperson of Maharashtra State Board of Secondary and Higher Secondary Examinations (MSBSHSE) said they had no choice but to mark the students absent for the paper, as they had not received either the forms or the examination fees.

"The school had collected the examination fees from these students and filled the forms with the photographs. But instead of submitting it at the education board's office, the clerk who had the money and forms ran away with it. The applications didn't reach us and that's why hall tickets weren't issued. Without valid hall tickets, the students had to miss the first paper," said Patil.

She said that as a special case the students would be allowed to appear for the paper from March 3, but said nothing could be done about their loss.

Sources in MSBSHSE said that the complaint didn't reach them until last morning, which was barely a few hours prior to the actual exams.

"The students and parents were told by the school that the hall ticket would arrive yesterday and when it didn't happen they complained to our office. It was too late for us to help them," said the source.

The board has promised to take action against the school management and the clerk starting with a police FIR and also plans to conduct a detailed inquiry into school's mismanagement. At least 50 other students could have met with the same fate had the board office not acted in time.

"The management of Kolhapur's Mahalaxmi High School forgot to send us the forms, while Mumbai's Mary Ann School was derecognised by the board. However, the parents had approached us and we made arrangements so that the students would not face any loss because of the school's mistake," said Patil.
