Officials of the 64-year-old University of Pune (UoP) have finally decided to set up an alumni association. To do so, the members of the varsity’s management council passed a resolution at a meeting that was held last week.u00a0Also decided at the meeting was to have a permanent office for the association on university’s campus.u00a0

UoP Director for Board of College and University Development (BCUD) Dr V B Gaikvad shared the news. “We have decided to start a special link on the varsity’s website for registration of alumni. We have several prominent ex-students who have settled abroad,” Gaikvad said.

The motive behind this new initiative is to use knowledge and experience of ex-students. “Alumni is varsity’s one of the biggest assets and the current crop of students can learn from their examples,” Gaikvad said.

The alumni will be given an option of making monetary contributions towards various projects initiated by the UoP. Officials from the university will soon approach the charity commissioner to register the association.

“We are going to establish a permanent office of the alumni association on varsity’s campus. This will help ex-students to keep in touch with the varsity and its current students,” Gaikvad said.

Senior Senate member
Dr Gajanan Ekbote welcomed the initiative, but said the move should have been initiated much earlier. “Colleges like COEP, Fergusson and Modern, among others, have their own alumni associations. The 64-year-old university is yet to have one,” Ekbote said.

Ekbote blamed varsity’s former V-Cs for being passive about forming the association. “In the last 20 years, the varsity got two V-Cs who were ex-students and professors of the university. But even they didn’t feel the need to form an alumni association. It is good that finally the UoP will have a platform for its former students,” Ekbote said.u00a0
