Never mind the thundershowers. With our seven-point monsoon make-up guide, you can kiss goodbye to smudgy eyes, botched up lip colour and bad hair days

7 tips to help you keep your make-up intact in the rains

The monsoon is a beautiful (if you're indoors) time but it can wreak havoc on your make-up when you step out.

Don't compromise on looking your best simply because of a few weather snags.

Here are the super 7 of cosmeritc tricks to ensure you don't come out with tears of black mascara

Set a foundation
The monsoon means rain and high humidity. Before you begin with the make-up, set a strong base. This starts with your three-step skin care routine — facewash, toner and moisturizer. Use an oil control, soap-free facewash to prevent breakouts without over-drying your skin. Once  out of the shower, use a cotton pad and rosewater as a natural toner to cleanse the skin. Follow this with a lightweight moisturizer with SPF (30 or more).

Lighten up
A general rule in humidity is to go easy on the hair and makeup. Try to go as natural as you can in order to avoid any makeup disasters. Foundation should be the first thing you get rid of, it's heavy, and can make your skin look oilier than it is which is a big no-no during the rains. If you can skip the blush and eye shadow, this will also bode you well. Stick to the basics.

Primer minister
Rainy days can be muggy and gloomy but don't let that show on your face! In order to keep all your make-up in place, choose a good primer that will reduce oiliness and stickiness. There are actually primers for every part of your face such as foundation and lip primers to eye shadow and lash primers. These primers go under your make-up and will maintain your look so all your hard work doesn't get washed down the drain.

Frizz control
One of the worst parts about the monsoon is the crazy humidity that has half the population looking like frizz balls! Hair can absorb up to a third of its weight in water, which isn't a good sign when you've left your umbrella at home. One way to control the frizz is to use a leave-in conditioner or frizz controlling serum before leaving the house. You could also start experimenting with hairstyles and start tying your hair up or braiding it rather than leaving it loose and exposed to the rain. After you blow dry or style your hair, spray a light coating or hairspray all over to keep it in place.

Waterproof everything
This cannot be emphasized enough. Almost every makeup product comes in a waterproof version so stock up on these for when it's raining cats and dogs. Waterproof mascara is an essential, and if you find a good one you can darken up your lashes and skip the eyeliner altogether. Use a solid foundation that comes in a stick or pot rather than liquid, and look for a smudge-free lipstick.

Let me pencil that in
Outline your lips with a matte lip liner and shade it in with a lipstick pencil. These products contain less water than lipstick and gloss so they will last longer and fight humidity better. For your eyes, try a waterproof kajal or kohl pencil to help you stand out. You can even find pencils in different colours to highlight your eyes. A touch of white eye liner at the corners of your eyes will add a pop of brightness. Stay away from liquid eyeliners as these are prone to smudging.

Stay in place
Now that you've done all this work to get your make up on, make sure it doesn't have the chance to go anywhere! A neat trick is to spray a super light coating of hair spray all over your face. This will automatically help your makeup stay in place and last longer.
