A 70-year-old retired government college principal here was raped and strangulated to death by a young man, who once worked as her domestic help, police said on Thursday. The accused has been arrested.

The retired principal of Ishwar Sharan Girls' College was on Wednesday raped and murdered at her residence in the posh George Town area by Amar Singh Yadav, 21.

"Yadav has admitted that he raped her, but initially had no intention to kill her. He says he strangulated her because she threatened to lodge a complaint to the police," Deputy Superintendent of Police SD Shukla told reporters here, some 200 km from Lucknow.

According to the police, Yadav had come to her house after a long gap.

"After committing the crime, Yadav was about the leave but saw the woman's maid coming towards the house and, therefore, preferred to hide on the rooftop of the house," Shukla said.

"After getting a call from the maid, we reached the site and started our investigations. We came across a pair of men's shoes lying in a corner of the house. As the woman used to live alone in the house, the recovery of the shoes made us believe that the accused could be hiding somewhere in the house," he added.

During the search, Yadav was nabbed from the rooftop.
