The 76.6 mm rainfall recorded in just 12 hours was a bane for drivers, as they had to navigate flooded streets, exposing Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation’s (BMC) lack of preparedness. Low-lying areas like Milan Subway, Hindmata, Gol Deval, and Aberdare Nagar were flooded after just a few hours of rain.

A drainpipe overflowed in Santacruz, causing dirty water to rush into the streets. Traffic was diverted at Hindmata and Sion. Bus services to Elphinstone station were halted as water had collected. To make up for trains not working on Harbour Line, BEST deployed 16 extra services from Wadala station and 13 from Kurla to CBD Belapur.

The day also had its share of accidents, with trees falling and blocking roads. The compound wall of Sun Height Society at Gandhi Nagar, Powai fell on two shanties, injuring five people. Nilesh Raut, a 24-year-old man, was feared trapped in the debris. He was rescued after three hours and admitted to Rajawadi Hospital.

Forecast
