This Sunday, film buffs can catch Shubhashish Bhutiani's Kush at its first screening outside of a film festival in India

“I started making Kush exactly a year ago,” recalls 22-year-old Shubhashish Bhutiani, over the phone line, en route to Mumbai, where his short -- finds itself in august company, being shortlisted for the Live Action Short Film category at the Oscars, 2014 -- and will have its first private screening at The Little Door, this Sunday.

The short is a sensitive take on the 1984 Sikh riots, where a teacher and her students try to protect the lone Sikh student among them while they return to Delhi after a field trip.
“I was pretty happy with the end result; I knew I wanted to make this film at some point. But it was only after I won some money for Kush’s script while at my film school did I feel that there was a realistic chance to make this film,” adds Bhutiani, who was inspired to embark on this project after one of his teachers shared a story about the turbulent chapter in India’s modern history.
The short has been earning accolades at several international and Indian festivals (it began its run here from September 2013 onwards). Shamiana will be the first to screen it outside of the film festival circuit in India. Post the screening of the short, the audience will have a chance to chat with Bhutiani at the venue itself. “The shortlist for the Oscars will be announced in two weeks’ time; I can’t wait,” signs off the young writer-director.
