Amid the concrete jungle we live in, a green patch of land at Bhulabhai Desai Road is set to bring immense joy to children.

Raj Shroff, general secretary, Mumbai Congress, and the Bhulabhai Desai Road Citizens Forum have taken over a 2-acre government plot behind the American Consulate and turned it into a garden for kids.

The date of the inauguration is not decided, but the garden will have swings, jungle gyms, slides from Denmark-based play equipment manufacturer Kompan and special ramps for children.

The forum has spent Rs. 3.5 crore for the development of the park and entry fee will be Rs 2 per head.

The idea of the garden came about when a friend called Shroff. "My friend told me he was taking his child to the mall on the weekend.

When I asked him why, he said, there are hardly any gardens for kids to play. It got me thinking," said Shroff.

Shroff is also one of the men responsible for garnering funds for the redevelopment of the Jijamata Udyan.

"I made a presentation to Uddhav Thackeray who took immediate action.

He also deserves credit for getting the Rs 400 crore sanction for the zoo," explained Shroff. He assures those against the redevelopment that trees won't be cut or damaged.

Do you know?

Raj Shroff is the son-in-law of Union Power minister and former Chief Minister Sushilkumar Shinde and also contested the 2004 Assembly elections
