Amigo strikes you with its sense of space and delectable Mediterranean fare

Long, long ago when fewer mortals roamed Delhi, restaurants had more 'legroom'.u00a0 Today, the tables snuggle so close to each other that you almost end up joining the banter in the next table you have been so patiently eavesdropping on.

So when you enter Amigo, the first thing that strikes you is the feeling of space. Spread over a carpet area of 3,00 sq ft, the fine-dining restaurant-cum-lounge bar has 40 covers. The strategic positioning of the tables adds to the feel of space. The bar tables too have been placed in such a manner that you are close enough to engage the bartender's attention but simultaneously have some privacy.

DOWN 'EM
Amigo boasts of a well-stocked bar. So you can order 10-year-old single malts like a Laphroaig or a 12-year old Glevlivet transporting you to northern Scotland. But then, the Talisker or the Macallan that were mentioned in the menu were not available.
For cocktails, check out Attack. Outlandish as the name might sound, this one's a mix of tequila, triple sec, vermouth and lime juice. It was decent but nothing phenomenal. You could also go for Passion, whipped up with tequila, triple sec, lime juice and cranberry juice.

MEXICAN WAVES
This place has been the haunting ground for Mexican food lovers, and attracts a lot of expat crowd. Besides that, they also serve a whole range of Italian, Turkish, Lebanese, Continental and Indian dishes which is also promising. However, the Mexican fare definitely stands out. Start with the golden fried Mexican chicken strips. As the name suggests, it is marinated deep-fried chicken coated with Mexican spices, a wonderful appetiser to down your whiskey with.

Then you could try garlicky prawns, pan-tossed prawns with butter, garlic and gualijo chili, another good accompaniment to your drink. Next was time for some world cuisine. So we went for penne con pollo arrabiatta (penne pasta with chicken, tomato sauce and olives). Since nowadays we tend to be as critical of our pasta as we would be of the quintessential dal makhni, let's just say the presentation was appetising but the magic garden fresh tomatoes could have done to the sauce was lacking.

Next on the menu was grilled cottage cheese steak sizzler, to please the tastebuds of vegetarians. If deciphered piece by piece, imagine something soft that melts in mouth leaving a lingering taste and makes you go for one more bite, well that's the grilled cottage cheese on top. The saffron rice for the base tasted good with the saut ufffded vegetables but the potato wedges, hmm ...now where have we had better ones? Was it McDonalds?

DITCH THE DESSERT
For desserts, you could try the homemade fig ice cream, simple without complicated ingredients, to end the meal. Or go for the mango berry truffle. But if you are watching your weight, hit your neighbourhood Baskin Robbins on the way back home.
