Three big bands from three different cities are all set to rock our town this weekend leading up to the Independence Day
This Saturday, the city will haveu00a0 more than its fair share of rock music. Pentagram, music composer Vishal Dadlani's Indian rock band, returns to town after the launch of their album Bloodywood this year and this time, they are not coming alone. Joining them, to set the stage ablaze are Kochi-based Motherjane and city-based All the Fat Children. We caught up with the two newer bands prior to the show and they admit, they are all set to get you headbanging.

Motherjane
This rock band comes from the heart of Kerala and became nearly synonymous with Indian Rock in the late 90s. With popular albums like V Out There and Insane Biography, Motherjane has performed across institutions in the country and headlined for International acts like Opeth. The current band line-up features Clyde on bass guitar, Deepu andu00a0 Santhosh on guitars, John on drums and percussion and Suraj on the vocals and lyrics.

What can one expect?
We played at the same venue with Pentagram seven years ago. You get to see the new axeman, Santosh Chandran, unleashed.
Your biggest strengths and weaknesses as a band?
We think all of us are equipped with whatever we need to fulfill our purpose as a band.
A favourite song from your band and favourite cover?
Karmic Steps would be my pick, and from the covers, it would be Bleed by Meshuggah.
Which genre does your music belong to? How important is it for a band to define its genre?
We call ourselves an art rock band. We would like to merge other art forms into our music. I think it's the urge of the system to tag and limit all human activities. It's some kind of a social pressure rather than a need.u00a0
What does music mean to you?
u00a0As Sting puts it, the biggest reward for playing music is music itself. It seems like a simple statement but actually carries a lot of weight.u00a0

Comment on the music scene in the city.
Sometime ago, somebody came up with this title, Headblore. I think he nailed it right there. Not just rock and metal, but other contemporary forms of music have found their base in this city.
All the fat children
The city-based band was formed inu00a0 2008 by Eben Johnson. They call themselves Fat Children and their form of music Fat Rock. They admit they are as lazy as a bunch of musicians can get and their individual musical influences are all over the place, quite literally. The current line-up features Eben 'Fatty' Johnson on guitars and vocals, Vickram 'Vicky' Kiran on bass and vocals and Sachin Savio Dane on drums.
What's in store for us?
We plan to rip the place apart,
create a riot and make complete fools of ourselves, which is the norm of course.
Your biggest strengths and weaknesses as a band?
Major strengths include the fact that our chemistry as a band is intact. We feel like a tight group on stage while performing. We are one mind on stage. Our major weakness is laziness, which from time to time, does get the better of us. And we can't really be blamed. We are fat, after all.

"My Favorite Heartbreaker" and "Shut Up And Dance".
Which genre does your music belong to? How important is it for a band to define its genre?
The band members are quite diverse in terms of music influences. The band, as such, sounds alternative rock/metal in nature. However, as a result of such diversity, we have decided to coin our own genre called "Fat Rock." It's our own way of introducing our music with an in-your-face attitude, live and loud. Yet it's all a party. It is important for a band to define a genre, so that it can be unique and stand out from a crowd of other bands and musicians and carve their own niche.
What does music mean to you?
Music is about letting yourself go and having a real good time. It's like a person that keeps you company in times when you need something to relate to and understand oneself.
Comment on the music scene in the city.
There seems to be a high level of competition in the music scene because as a result of which the real element of music is lost. Lot of bands spring up and blossom, but not for long. There is less diversity in the music scene in the city.
