From scoring big runs to taking crucial wickets to leading Mumbai in the Irani Trophy, Abhishek Nayar has done it all in domestic cricket, and that too, for quite a long period on a consistent basis.

But this talented all-rounder has another special quality that not many cricket fans are aware of. Nayar advises a number of upcoming cricketers with where and how to invest their hard earned money. “I have had some tough times (financially) early on.

That’s where I have learned the importance of investments. A cricketer’s career span is not that long. It’s important to make good savings in that short span,” Nayar told MiD DAYu00a0yesterday.

The most expensive Indian player (USD 6,75,000) of the last IPL auction, Nayar does not have a great educational background as far as economics is concerned. “I have had good friends who are investment consultants.

I have learned a lot from them. I am a good spender in general, but I know how important it is to save money,” Nayar said. “Most of the players whom I help with investments are those budding cricketers who are just beginning to play for Mumbai. Those players are not very well off financially. The players who are well off, they obviously don’t need my advice,” he added.

Talking about cricket, the 29-year-old enters IPL-VI on the back of an incredible domestic season for Mumbai, in which he scored over 900 runs and took 21 wickets. Perhaps, the only blot was a 17-ball-over that he bowled, including 10 wides, in a Deodhar Trophy game for West Zone.

“I messed it up. I kept laughing at myself. I couldn’t believe what I was doing. The only thing I told everyone in the dressing room after that was, ‘can you imagine what I went through when I had to bowl that second over?’ ” he said. u00a0
