While the world was bringing in the New Year, for the families of a few, it was a tragic night as their loved ones died in accidents across the city

Nineteen year-old Shraddha Lokre, a first year MBBS student at the Lokmanya Tilak Medical College attached to Sion hospital was on her way home after she celebrated her New Year at a hotel in Ghodbunder, Thane, when the vehicle she was travelling in met with a fatal accident at around 1 am.

"The driver lost control of the car at Ghodbunder road and rammed into the divider. The car got completely smashed but three other passengers, along with the driver, escaped with minor injuries. Lokre who was in the rear seat, died," said a police officer. Lokre, a resident of Mira Road, was rushed to Bhagwati Hospital, Borivali, where she was declared dead on arrival. Dr Sandhya Kamat, Dean of Sion Hospital said, "There is a student of this name at our college but we are not aware about the accident."

Like Lokre, motorist Sonu Chotelal Singh (26), who was returning after a New Year party, met with an accident when on his bike at around 5.30 am.

Sanket Tawde (20) was on his way to Gorai on his bike, heading to a New Year's party. Tragedy struck, however, when his bike collided with a bus at Manori and he succumbed to his injuries on the spot. Police officers confirmed that Tawde wasn't drunk.

Jignesh Thakur Prajapati (22), a resident of Vile Parle, died on the Western Express Highway, while he was returning home after a New Year celebration. Prajapati had gone to Bhayander to ring in 2011 with his friend Navjot Singh. On his way home, Prajapati stopped at Borivali's Sai Baba Nagar to pick up another friend, Bhavesh Waghela (17).

Based on preliminary information, police officers say Prajapati's bike skidded and he suffered severe injuries. Prajapati's post mortem was conducted at the Bhagwati Hospital and the doctors will test Prajapti's blood to ascertain if he was drunk when the accident took place. Waghela, who suffered severe injuries and was admitted to the hospital, is serious.

In two other separate incidents, Abhijeet Zore and Abdul Waheed Mohammad Yasim Shaikh (54) met with an accident while boarding a train at Borivali station. The duo died on the spot.
