Atul Kulkarni plays a wrestler who wants to be part of a local tamasha group in Ravi Jadhav's Nataranga. The role required Atul to change his diet plan and get into a serious workout mode to look like a wrestler. The actor had to gain 15 kgs in two months.

Talking about his drastic transformation, Atul says, "I trained under Shailesh Parulekar, who owns a chain of gyms in the city. He chalked out a diet and work regimen for me, keeping in mind the look I needed to have.

It was important that I didn't sport a body that looked like it was heavily trained by machines.u00a0 I play a wrestler and so, wanted to look as natural as possible."

Atul's training included lot of freehand exercises and jogging that helped him build up his stamina. "My weight before training was 72 kgs, and we had a target of 85 kgs in mind.

I started working out sometime in November. In the beginning, I'd walk or jog for an hour; that helped me build my stamina. Once that was accomplished, we moved on to heavy weights with a few repetitions."

He adds, "More than training, it was the diet that was important. I started eating a lot more than I did before.

However, I had to be careful about what I ate. My focus was having high carbs, proteins and avoiding anything that had too much fat.

I'd eat every three to four hours. In fact, I'd set an alarm at night, wake up and eat. Without Parulekar Sir's diet chart, this wouldn't have been possible."

Around January, Atul attained the physique he had aimed for. "I had a trainer with me on the sets while shooting for Natarang.

He'd follow up on my workout. I had to retain the look and make sure my body structure didn't show any changes. I remember working out in the fields with my trainer."

Losing it

Soon after, it was time to lose the weight. "It wasn't as easy as I thought. Also it was depressing for my trainer to see me lose my hard earned muscle.

I had to do it the correct way, so that my skin didn't become loose and saggy. We did circuit training, a lot of jogging and cardio. Today, I'm back to 69.5 kgs, which I think is my normal body weight."

Does he plan to continue working out after the film is wrapped? "Definitely. How-ever, I don't want to have a bulky body but something that's lean and toned."
