Adarsh scam: Vyas, Phatak suspended

According to the latest development in the Adarsh scam, yesterday, the state informed the Bombay High Court that it has suspended senior IAS officers Pradeep Vyas, secretary (expenditure), ministry of finance and Jairaj Phatak, member secretary, statutory development board, until investigation in the case is complete. While Vyas was the collector of Mumbai, Phatak was the municipal commissioner, when the scam took place.

During the last hearing on March 12, the court had issued a couple of directives: firstly, demanding the formation of a High Powered Committee (HPC) among CBI, ED and Income Tax to probe benami transactions and secondly, it wanted to know whether the CBI had written to the state, asking it to take disciplinary action against Phatak and Vyas.

Satisfied with HPC's functioning, the court scheduled the next hearing for April 30. It also stated that it had complete faith in CBI and that their investigation is moving in the right direction.

Police custody
All the four accused -- K L Gidwani, Maj Gen (Rtd) A R Kumar, Maj Gen (Rtd) T K Kaul and Dr Pradeep Vyas, who were arrested in Adarsh Society Case on Wednesday, were produced before the CBI Court, which remanded them to police custody. While Kumar, Kaul and Vyas will remain in custody till March 31, Gidwani's custody ends on March 26.
