Until yesterday, Karan Johar was waging a lonely battle against the right wing parties, which have called for a ban on his Diwali release, Ae Dil Hai Mushkil, since it features Pakistani actor Fawad Khan. But, now, a small but significant section of Bollywood is gradually coming out in his support, condemning the boycott of artistes from across the border as a fallout of strained political ties.

Foe-turned-friend Anurag Kashyap posted a series of strongly-worded tweets on the Ae Dil row. Directing angst towards the Prime Minister, the filmmaker wrote, "@narendramodiSir you haven't yet said sorry for your trip to meet the Pakistani PM. It was Dec 25th. [Around the] Same time [that] KJo was shooting for ADHM. Why?"
Kashyap went on to question the reason behind the industry being compelled to bear the brunt of the situation when the PM gets to choose silence. Congress leader Digvijay Singh praised Kashyap for his courage with a tweet that read, "Kudos for questioning Modi's visit to Pakistan".
Nil Battey Sannata actress Swara Bhaskar is another addition to the Johar support group. She pointed out that the row is testimony to the fact that "cinema in India is vulnerable to all kinds of rage and misguided passion of everyone." She added, "Instead of banning and boycotting films, I wonder how many self-proclaimed patriots make any real contribution benefiting our soldiers."
KJo's protégés Alia Bhatt and Sidharth Malhotra too rallied behind him. "I think it's not fair to a filmmaker because the film was made a year ago. The political scenario was very different back then. Also, we are not stopping any other ties with that country, but only movies," said the Baar Baar Dekho actor. Alia echoed his opinion, saying, "As a proud resident of this country and as a privileged member of this industry, [I say] whatever is happening with the film is unfair."
