Composer duo Vishal-Shekhar were under the scanner last year because they didn’t get off the mark for the whole of 2015. The highly productive duo juggles multiple roles as talent show judges, mentors, rockers and playback singers, but not much was heard from them on the Bollywood music front. In fact, there were rumours that they might split. However, the duo put all gossip to rest when the soundtracks of Fan and Sultan came out this year. Then there’s Akira and upcoming films, Banjo and Befikre.

Why the hiatus? Shekhar Ravjiani says it wasn’t a strategic time-out. “Since we started out together, we’ve never charted out a course when it comes to our music. We have done whatever challenged and motivated us. Last year saw a lull, but it gave us an opportunity to recharge our creative selves. We are grateful that people have loved and appreciated everything we have put out this year.”

Talking about working together, Vishal Dadlani says the process is organic. They ensure they have a good time. “We try to stay true to the film we are working on; no intellectualising of the process. The smarter you think you are, the more artifice in the music. So the key is to stay humble, work our butts off, and find joy in every song.”

Despite being a duo, Vishal and Shekhar also maintain their individuality as musicians. Says Shekhar, “We allow each other the freedom to pursue anything that piques our interests. We take detours and have our little adventures on the side, like my stint with acting in Neerja. But when we work together on a film, it’s meeting of two minds. There’s only one purpose for the both of us — to create music that will live longer than either of us.”
