A 15-year-old girl who went missing under mysterious circumstances in April has been rescued from Pune by Kasturba police. Cops have also arrested a 19-year-old man who kidnapped the girl and have brought him to Mumbai. The accused, identified as Nitin Londe, is a resident of Devipada -- a shantytown in Borivli (East) -- where the victim also stayed.

According to Kasturba police, the girl left home on April 6, telling her family that she was going to school to collect the results of her exams. When she did not return, her anxious parents registered a missing complaint at Kasturba police station the next day.

When cops started investigating the case they found that the victim’s neighbour Nitin too had disappeared. Suspecting his involvement, police began tracking his mobile phone. Finally, they registered a case of kidnapping against him. Meanwhile, attempts to trace him proved futile, as the accused was using multiple SIM cards and was roaming in various cities like Satara, Nagpur and Pune with the victim. Cops later learnt that he was using as many as eight mobile phones. Finally, Nitin settled down with the girl in a quarter provided by his friend Ajay Dhotre in Pune.

At the time, Ajay and a minor boy were working as labourers on contractual basis and he advised Nitin to do the same. The latter agreed. Cops said, a few days ago, Ajay stole his employer’s bike, as the latter was not paying his wages. The owner lodged a case against Ajay at the local police station.

Police officials said, Nitin and the victim lived together for more than a month but he did not force her to have sex, as he knew that he could then be charged with rape. However, the girl has been sent to Nagpada hospital for medical examination to determine whether or not she was sexually assaulted. Cops said Nitin follows crime serials on TV and he drew inspiration from them on how to dodge the law.

Police said that one of Ajay’s relatives was to get married in Pune on May 23 and he wanted Nitin to tie the knot with the girl at the same ceremony.

“The accused has been booked for kidnapping and arrested,” said API Nishikant Sawant, from Kasturba police station.u00a0
