Cow at Colaba footpath which is causing a nuisance

The footpath near Kuvar House at Colaba’s Kittridge Road near Sassoon Docks is a treacherous walk for pedestrians thanks to a cow that sits there from early morning to evening. Bella Shah from My Dream Colaba, an Advance Locality Management (ALM) group said, "The hawkers have taken over Colaba Causeway and now for a few months a cow and a lady who feeds her have occupied the footpath near Kuvar House. We work in this area and for a long time, we have been trying to tell the cow lady to find some other place. With the rains, the roads are flooded and there is no choice for pedestrians except walking on the congested road."

Many senior citizens use the road to head to the gardens nearby for a walk. Nanda Bedi who is also from My Dream Colaba said, "The cow needs to be removed as it messes up the footpath. The cow dung and cow food is all over. It stinks too. A number of children who study in the Colaba Municipal School also uses the road and with the footpath, taken over they have no choice but to walk on the road."

AS Magar, Principal of Colaba Municipal School said, "We have 1200 children who come to our school. Due to the cow on the footpath, many of them who come via Kittridge Road have to walk on the road. There is a lot of traffic at the time they come to school and when they leave from here. I am afraid since they have to walk on the road."

My Dream Colaba members claim that they have tried speaking to the woman who owns the cow as well as the BMC. Cynthia D’mello says she missed falling down while trying to walk on the footpath. "The cow dung and rain mixes and it is very slippery. I would have fallen and broken my knees. The authorities need to get this woman and her cow off the footpath as it is a menace," she said.

The lady who owns the cow says her name is Kamala L and she has been on the footpath with the cow for many years. "My mother before me and this cow’s mother were here. People worship the cow. These ALM people just want to harass a poor person like me. The cow sits at one side; this blocking information is not true. On rainy days, we don’t even come. These accusations are all made up," she said.

Kiran Digaokar, A ward Assistant Municipal Commissioner said, "My staff are working on clearing this foothpath. We have a plan to clear all footpaths in Colaba, soon."

Till that happens, pedestrians will have to mind the cow as they commute via Kittridge Road as the rains continue to lash the city.
