After years of struggle, Bosco's (Borivli) beat counterparts from Matunga, thanks to school's move of reserving last two periods for physical training
Don Bosco (Borivli) stunned Don Bosco (Matunga) 4-3 via tie breaker in the U-14 Div I semi-final of the Mumbai Schools Sports Association (MSSA) inter-school football tournament at Azad Maidan. Given the Matunga outfit's superiority in school football the news will have surprised many. However, the Borivli school's planning has been meticulous. The Borivli school principal Fr George Carlos' idea of turning the last two classes of the day into compulsory physical training periods is working wonders as the kids use it to practice football.

"Earlier, boys would not come for practice as they have to go for tuitions. But now since the last two periods have been allocated to compulsory physical training, practice is regular and the turnout is good," revealed Bosco's (Borivli) coach Melwyn Fernandes.
It's no wonder then that Carlos was a happy man yesterday after watching his boys beat their Matunga counterparts. "I'm very happy that we beat a good team like Bosco (Matunga) and that too in a semi-final.
While it might be shocking news for you, but our boys have been working really hard for this, and I'm not surprised with the result," Carlos told MiD DAY. Don Bosco (Borivli) will take on Campion (Cooperage) in the final. Campion beat Navy Children (Colaba) 1-0 in the other semi-final.
Neil Menezes opened the scoring for the Borivli school after which Matunga's Bryce Miranda equalised and send the game into the tie breaker. In the shoot-out, Brendon D'Souza, Yelstyn D'Souza and Wayne Trinidade scored for the Borivli school, while only Aditya Shandilya and Nathan Fernandes were on target for Matunga.u00a0
Sunil Bhatia, who previously coached the Borivli school for over a decade, said his ladsu00a0 always found it difficult to beat Matunga, be it in football or hockey. "This win is special because there was a time when the Borivli school found it nearly impossible to beat the Matunga team in both football and hockey. That has obviously changed now. This (win) is a consequence of the two sports periods that have been introduced this year.
The boys can now play without losing out on valuable study time which I'm sure even their parents won't mind."u00a0 Don Bosco (Matunga) coach Leslie Machado meanwhile put the defeat down to overconfidence. "We lost due to overconfidence, but full credit to them. They played exceptionally well," he said.
