Kolkata: After occupying her office chamber for four days, a group of Presidency University students on Tuesday vacated Vice-Chancellor Anuradha Lohia's room.

"When she came in the morning she forced her way inside and so we did not create any hustle. If she is already occupying the office then what is the point of gheraoing her chair? " Trisha Chanda, general secretary of the students union, told PTI.

The students had put the VC under a 26-hour-long gherao since Friday evening alleging police assault during Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee's visit.

After Lohia left on Saturday the students had continued to remain inside her room saying that they will gherao her chair until she resigns.

Both the West Bengal government and Lohia had made it clear that she was not going to put in her papers.

"The chief minister came to the campus to give us funds and if she is being so benevolent then why shouldn't we accept it. I do not understand what problems these students have," Lohia said.

The students who had occupied the VC's office since Friday evening went out of the room afterwards where they had been agitating. Earlier in the day, a small group of students came to the campus carrying placards and covering their mouths with a piece of cloth as a mark of protest against the VC.

Student leaders said their protests against the VC will continue in some form.
