Tirunelveli: An AIADMK functionary was today hacked to death at Kongarayakurichi in the district by some unidentified assailants, police said.
Police suspect rivalry between some communities for the murder. Police said armed police personnel have been deployed in the area as soon as the news about the murder of Pitchaippa (60), a local secretary of the party, spread.
Some persons attacked a 40-year-old woman to avenge Pitchaippa's murder and she has been admitted to hospital in a serious condition, police said.
There was rivalry between three communities in the areaover mining of sand, and the AIADMK functionary could have been murdered due to this, police said.
The damage to a statue of Congress leader K Kamaraj in the area could be another reason for the murder, said DSP Vijayakumar. The culprits would be arrested soon, he added.
