AIFF to dig into Mahindra Utd fracas

The All India Football Federation wants to know what caused top flight team Mahindra to shut down its football activity.

Speaking to MiD DAY, AIFF Vice President, Subrata Dutta, said, "AIFF President, Praful Patel, will talk to Anand Mahindra (Vice Chairman & Managing Director, Mahindra & Mahindra Ltd) to find out what triggered the move."

On Friday, Mahindra announced that the decision to disband the team was taken because the firm wanted to concentrate on grassroot activity.

"We realised that we were not contributing much to development of the game in the country by running a football club. In India we have just 300-400 players, who get a chance to play club football at the top level.

We will work at grassroots level to increase the pool by investing in school soccer," Mahindra United's president Alan Durante was quoted as saying.

When asked what sort of help AIFF plans to extend, Dutta said: "With Mahindra United team being backed by such a big and established organisation, I don't think it was an issue concerning funds. We need to find out what got them (Mahindra) frustrated. AIFF will certainly extend any help which they might need."

According to Dutta, the Mahindra issue is the main agenda for the AIFF board meeting on May 7. Meanwhile, the Mahindra United team reached Goa yesterday to take on Sporting Clube de Goa in their I-League match tomorrow.
