Congress leader Ajit Jogi today strongly opposed party colleague Janardan Dwivedi's controversial suggestion about ending caste-based quotas.

Talking to reporters in Raipur, Jogi said that the system of reservation for SCs, STs and OBCs had been introduced to end social inequality in the country.

The quota system for government jobs and educational institutes was put in place after a thorough debate by scholars and the architect of the Indian Constitution, BR Ambedkar, said Jogi, the former Chhattisgarh Chief Minister.

It would be wrong to end this decades-long arrangement which benefits the disadvantaged sections of society, he added. Jogi is the President of the Adivasi Mahasangh, a tribal body.

He, meanwhile, added that there was a need to introduce reservation in the private sector as well since the social and economic condition of a vast majority of tribals, Dalits and OBC members had not seen any significant improvement even after 67 years of Independence.
