A day after singer Nelly stated that he was 'shocked' to learn of the allegations of rape levied on him, which led to his arrest and subsequent release, rapper Akon came to the artiste's defence.

Talking to international portal TMZ, Akon stated, "[Nelly] is an amazing person... I'm almost 100 per cent positive that he's innocent. People like us are targets on every level. [Often] they'll [people] set up a charge just for us to settle out. Just so we don't deal with the embarrassment and go through the process of fighting it. Once you get that stigma, it's on you, whether you are guilty or not."

The duo has previously collaborated on the track, Body On Me (2008). Nelly was apparently arrested and questioned after a woman called 911 to report being sexually assaulted by him on his tour in Auburn.
