This 26-year-old composer has peculiar traits. He is at his creative best as the world sleeps. Or when he is behind the wheels. An emotion-filled voice matters to him more than getting the scale right. He is among a handful of music directors, who is comfortable admitting to the use of auto-tuning in making music. With several uptempo dance
numbers and romantic hits to his credit, Amaal Malik has had top names — from ace singers Sonu Nigam and Arijit Singh to stars Salman Khan and Shraddha Kapoor — sing for him.

Discussing his next project, Sonakshi Sinha-starrer Noor, Amaal says, "It gave me the chance to explore something new." He adds that he got a lot of time to work on the film's score, unlike the songs he has recently composed.

While several veteran singers, composers and music aficionados criticise the use of auto-tuners in music-making, Amaal reasons why its use is important: "At times, a song decides if it needs an auto-tuner. The software helps set the recording scale to a particular pitch. So, in case an instrument is going off-tune, it indicates that. In case some notes are slightly off-key, you can fix them with Antares (auto-tuner). When you record with big singers, they don't have the time to come back and re-record their bits. So while composers are blamed for putting auto-tuner to use, people should know that we do it only when we don't have choice and when small portions need to be fixed."

He adds that he relies on tech mostly for dance tracks. "In case of Badshah and Fazilpuria in Kar Gayi Chull (Kapoor & Sons), I had added a tinge of auto-tuner to their voice and the chorus. Technology made it sound better."
