Amarnath Yatra resumes from Baltal camp

Srinagar: The Amarnath Yatra annual Hindu pilgrimage in Jammu and Kashmir resumed from one of the two base camps at Baltal camp on Thursday, four days after it was suspended because of landslides.

Pilgrims were allowed to proceed to the north Kashmir camp from Manigam transit camp in Ganderbal district.

With this, the yatra is underway from both Pahalgam and Baltal base camps.

On Wednesday, one-way traffic was restored on the Srinagar-Leh highway after five days as the road was hit by landslides caused by cloudbursts last week, a police officer told IANS.

Pilgrims have to undertake an uphill trek of 14 kms from the Baltal base camp to reach the Himalayan cave shrine at 14,500 feet above the sea level.

Those using the south Kashmir Pahalgam mountain route trek 46 kms and take three days to reach their destination.
