Los Angeles: Actress Amber Heard was forced to abruptly leave an awards gala after suffering an apparent medical emergency.

The 30-year-old actress was supposed to receive an award at the unite4:humanity gala, an event known for honuoring the philanthropic work of celebrities.

But before Amber's big moment, she fell seriously ill and abruptly left the venue midway through the ceremony. It's not clear if she went to a hospital or simply went home, reported E! online.

Cara Delevingne and iO Tillett Wright eventually took the stage to accept the award on her behalf.

Amber was feted for her humanitarian work with the American Civil Liberties Union.

"Our dear friend Amber unfortunately suffered a bit of an emergency earlier this evening and she had to go," iO said.

The award was presented by Ayaan Hirsi Ali, a Somali-born Dutch activist, and apparently a huge hero of Amber's.

"And I want to also say that I've never seen Amber nervous and I've known her quite intimately for a long time. And she's met pretty much everyone that you could be starstruck by," iO said.

"But Ayaan Hirsi Ali is as close to God as you could get for her, so to know that Ayaan was here and for her to have to leave anyway means that it was a very serious emergency. We both are hoping that she's okay."
