The nation’s righteous outrage over the gang rape of a woman in Delhi in a moving bus should not stop at just words. We are well past the breaking point of tolerance when it comes to the safety of women in Indian society.
It is no secret that Mumbai is no longer ‘safe’; a place where a woman could walk the streets alone at two in the morning to reach home. While there must be anger at the decline of our city, it is time to convert that anger into something constructive.

Therefore, the ‘Make Mumbai Safe’ campaign.
Over the next few weeks, MiD DAY will highlight where this city is going wrong in protecting its women, question authorities and suggest solutions by speaking to experts in law enforcement and societal change. We know it is not an easy task; we are aware that our effort may not bear fruit in the short term.
But none of us, dear readers, can afford to keep quiet anymore. Fatalism has to be replaced by actionable policy change that includes strengthening the criminal justice system and effecting a better conviction rate in cases of sexual violence against women which, at present, is a measly 26 per cent.
In any democracy, the government’s first duty is to protect its citizens. It is time India’s governments, at all levels, live up to that.
