Andhra DGP backtracks, says comments misrepresented
After facing criticism from women's groups and citizens online for politically incorrect comments, Andhra Pradesh police chief Dinesh Reddy on Saturday blamed some television news channels for misinterpreting and linking his comments on women's dresses to the increase in rape cases.
While replying to a query at a press conference, the police chief said the dresses that were being worn by women were provoking men. "Otherwise, why in certain schools you are banning girls from wearing shorts," he asked at the conference.
Later in a statement issued from the office of the director general of police (DGP) on Friday evening, he said the misrepresentation hurt him and added that it was a free country and people were free to wear what they like. Reddy's remarks on Friday had evoked strong reactions from women's groups.
