Jolie, who revealed her news in the New York Times on Monday, asked the publication to pass on her thanks to fans later that day, the Mirror reported.
The Oscar-winning actress’ mother Marcheline Bertrand died of ovarian cancer in 2007 at the age of 56 and she also has a 50 percent chance of getting the same disease.
Following the successful surgery, doctors now estimate Jolie, who has been praised for her choice by husband Brad Pitt, has less than a 5 percent chance of developing breast cancer.
