Relatives of a patient who succumbed to his injuries while undergoing treatment at Rajawadi Hospital, Ghatkopar ran amok inside the hospital on Saturday evening, breaking windows and assaulting doctors on duty, alleging medical negligence.
Afzal Akmal Khan (38), a resident of Govandi, met with a road accident at Cheeda Nagar in Ghatkopar and was rushed to a nearby hospital around 2 pm. He was then shifted to the Rajawadi Hospital and admitted in the surgical ICU ward.
According to the doctors treating Khan, as there was a delay in admitting him to the hospital by relatives, he got severe infection. Khan also had multiple fractures. Doctors said despite their best efforts, the patient succumbed to his injuries at 7 pm.
Once news of his death broke, angry relatives alleged medical negligence and ransacked the ICU ward. They also assaulted a doctor and nurse on duty.
Sources in the hospital also told Sunday MiD DAY that relatives dragged the nurse and doctor out of the ICU in a fit of rage.
Following the assault, the hospital staff went on a flash protest demanding immediate action against the relatives who assaulted the doctor and the nurse.
Vidya Thakur, deputy medical superintendent, Rajawadi Hospital, told SMD, “The condition of the patient was critical from the time he was brought to the hospital and we tried our best to save his life but he succumbed to the injuries. After the patient died, the relatives started ransacking the hospital and even assaulted our doctor and nurse. The police immediately arrived at the site and have assured that action will be taken against those responsible for ransacking the hospital and assaulting our staff.”
