In yet another case of a suspected illegal abortion, a five-month-old foetus was found on a footpath at Matunga on Wednesday around 7 pm.

The foetus was found wrapped in a newspaper opposite Srinivasa Lodge, Matunga (West) by a footpath dweller. According to officials, Kantha (48), a vagrant found the foetus at 7 pm on Wednesday and when she realised that it was a baby, she alerted the authorities at Shivaji Park following which the foetus was taken to Sion hospital for a medical examination.

Dr Rajesh Dere, MD (Forensic Medicine), Sion hospital said, “A male foetus was brought to the hospital on Wednesday night. The post-mortem was conducted on Thursday wherein we determined the foetus to be 20-22 weeks old.

The delivery is most probably not a clinical one, as the umbilical cord was still attached to the foetus. Even the plasma was found to be intact in the umbilical cord, which wouldn’t be the case if it was a clinical delivery.” The doctor added there were two possibilities regarding the delivery. He said that either it was a case of an abortion or an in-home delivery.

Senior Inspector Vijay Kumar Ruchankar, Shivaji Park police station said, “We have filed a case under Section 318 (Concealment of birth by secret disposal of dead body).”
