Another girl child killed in the womb?

District Civil Surgeon Dr Vinayak More has initiated an enquiry after he came across a case of an alleged female foeticide in a private hospital 40 kms from the city. A woman from Talegaon Dabhade, who is in her second trimester, had purportedly got her pregnancy terminated on Sunday.

The case came to light after one of the primary health workers informed about it to the Convener of Lek Ladki Abhiyaan Varsha Deshpande. According to Deshpande, the woman got her ultrasound done at Bhandari Hospital and her case was referred to a doctor at another hospital. Deshpande alleged that doctors prescribed her medicine for abortion and discharged her soon after she started bleeding. “The pregnancy was terminated after the parents found out that it was female foetus.”

“Soon after we got the information, we sent our team to Bhandari Hospital in Talegaon Dabhade. However, we couldn’t find the woman there, as she had already been discharged. Hence, we sent the team to conduct a search at her residence, but the woman was at her maternal home” said More.

The team recorded her statement and collected her biological sample after she was brought to a civil hospital. The sample has now been sent to the state-run tertiary hospital and the reports are awaited.

“In her statement, the woman said that prior to this incident, she had complained of bleeding and that her pregnancy got terminated while she was attending nature’s call. As getting the foetus from the public toilet wasn’t viable, we carried out a surgery and collected samples for the determination of the sex of fetus. We are waiting for the report, as the case might be a case of female foeticide. We are also seeking the expert advice from doctors of Sassoon hospital,” More added.

Meanwhile Deshpande demanded that the woman, her husband and her mother-in-law be interrogated. “The civil surgeon should lodge a complaint against those who are responsible for carrying out illegal abortion,” she demanded.

When contacted, Deepali Bhandari, radiologist from Bhandari Hospital, said, “The patient had been sent to us sonography, and had a history of the bleeding. Her report said that the placenta is dislocated, which can causes spontaneous abortion.”u00a0
