Another roadblock for city schools: elections

First swine flu kept teachers away from school; now it's polling duties

After a forced break due to swine flu, most schoolteachers will now have to take more time away from their classrooms to finish polling duties in the upcoming Assembly elections. Having already faced a cut in the Diwali holidays because of the forced break in August, teachers are complaining that they're now being pushed to the brink.u00a0

The principal of a south Mumbai school said, "We have many branches of our school in different areas; this is going to be a challenging time for all. Semester papers are conducted on the same day in all branches and training dates for different schools will postpone the exam dates. We have changed our timetable four times so far and might have to change it again."

Father Jude Fernandez, Stanislaus School, Bandra, said, "Swine flu messed up the routine and the upcoming polls will further complicate the situation. School exams, SSC board papers and elections have come all at once which can also lead to further postponement of exams. How can teachers attend training, conduct poll duties, complete syllabuses, conduct exams and then evaluate papers in a few weeks?"

Uday Nare, a teacher from Hansraj Morarji Public School, Andheri, said that election duty is always a tough time for school. "This time around, it has become worse because of the lack of time. We don't mind doing the duty and it wouldn't seem like such a daunting task if the basic facilities were provided," he added.

But the State Chief Electorate officer, Debashish Chakrabarty, said several facilities are being provided. He said, "We're not sending female teachers too far. We're also providing them with food allowances during training. We will try our best to ensure that the election dates do not clash with exams."
