Are monster movies making a comeback in Hollywood?

Are monster movies coming back? We think they never left. We list the best creature features for you

A two-headed gremlin with tentacles all over his body emerges from under a child’s bed while a ginormous Tyrannosaurus rex rips a man apart in one single bite. It’s an age-old truth, we all love seeing the darkest, scariest depths of our imagination come to life on screen in the form of a creature movie. With movies like Jurassic World and Poltergeist slated for a release soon, we explore Hollywood’s fascination with the terrifying world of make believe (or is it?) with this lowdown.

Godzilla

Godzilla
This vengeful, massive, unusually enlarged monster could probably guzzle down all the other monsters on this list without wasting a breath. A classic favorite, who wouldn’t love a gigantic dinosaur stomping his way through the city and taking out everything that stands in his way. Think of a great monster from the past unleashing his ire all around and you can’t not think of Godzilla.

Jurassic Park

Jurassic Park
If giant T-rex’s running around trying to slaughter humans and Velociraptors cornering you in a dark kitchen doesn’t scare you, what will? These colossal giants who were deemed extinct were brought back to life on the big screen through this frightening franchise.

Lake Placid

Lake Placid
A mysterious death forces the local police to look into the case that eventually leads to the location of an enormous and extremely vicious crocodile that can demolish anything on it’s path. This American creature movie remains a cult hit among cinema lovers. The core of the film that dealt with human survival was a huge financial hit and was followed by a series of sequels.

Anaconda

Anaconda
A film crew is taken hostage by an evil hunter who leads them on his personal, motive-driven quest to capture the world’s deadliest and largest snake. This adventure film definitely deserves a spot just for the amount of cringes and creeps it managed to garner from the audience the world over.

Jaws

Jaws
A quaint seaside town is suddenly buzzing following a terrorizing shark attack. The premise sounds simple enough, and yet this is easily one of the best creature movies ever made. Spielberg's monster drama had all the elements that make thrillers, thrillers. A terrifying monster that can't be reasoned with and a bunch of people stuck in an endless abyss of a river without much chance to escape sewed together to make this epic creature movie.

King Kong

King Kong
A gigantic, peace-loving, island-dwelling Gorilla is captured and brought to the big, bad city where he falls in love with a girl and of course, all hell breaks loose. No creature movie, arguably, managed to make an impact such as this. These massive human-like apes inspired a generation of gorilla movies like Mighty Joe Young and Planet of the Apes. Peter Jackson re-made King Kong in 2005 and of course the new movie was ever scarier owing to the special effects and locations.

The Mist

The Mist
Not many people can write a horror/ fantasy with half the gumption the maestro, Stephen King can. And the movie more than justified his genius. A mysterious and thick Mist encapsulates a small town, where a group of people are trapped in a grocery store. Anyone who attempts to fight the mist is strangely and violently killed. Replete with tentacled monsters and alien invasions, this is one movie you can’t miss.

Tremors

Tremors
Before Dinosaurs and Gorillas were wrecking havoc all over, this cult movie was already making waves. Tongue-wielding monsters called graboids that dwelled within the deep realms of the earth and picked up instantly on any movement had us sitting on the edge of our seats waiting for the next attack while giggling hysterically too. This successful film earned itself a TV series along with a spate of sequels as well.
