The Movies I Loved Growing Up
The director picks his choice of flicks...

Aradhana was the first film that I remember seeing, after which I was made to wear all clothes, Rajesh Khanna style.

I saw the film at Bandra Talkies. To my five-year-old mind then, Aradhana was a film made by Rajesh Khanna.

He wrote the lyrics, the dialogues, he made the songs, and he sang them, and so did Sharmilaji. And the projectionist was Rajesh Khanna's friend!u00a0

Jason And The Argonauts was a mythological adventure film that I remember seeing at Shree Talkies in Prabhadevi.

I felt fear and thrill for the first time watching Jason and The Argonauts. I also saw foreigners for the first time on screen.

I have seen Mr Ramanand Sagar's Aankhen several times in Kum Kum aapa's living room. She is my neighbour and my family.

She is the actress of several movies of the '60s including Mother India, Kohinoor and Aankhen. Through Aankhen, I discovered Mr Mehmood.

And I discovered the importance of a comedian in a movie. According to me, Mehmood is still the greatest comedian actor ever!

Pakeezah was the first Muslim social period film that I saw and loved, especially for the song Chalte Chalte.

I saw it in Nandi Cinema near Bandra station. I saw Pakeezah after Meena Kumariji passed away. And I was told that before I saw the film.

And throughout the film, I kept wondering how Meena Kumariji could be alive when they said she was no more. And hence, I landed up falling in love with her much more.

I had so much identification with Yaadon Ki Baaraat that I felt that I was one of the kids. So I enjoyed it much more. And my first crush was Zeenat Aman.

I saw this film at Neptune Cinema near Bandra station. And I loved Yaadon Ki Baaraat so much that I also included it in Swades.

These five films formed my first impression about cinema along with all of Chaplin's cinema and the Laurel and Hardy movies.
