Seems it’s back to his notorious heydays for Ashwin Naik – giving cops the runaround after browbeating someone. Even as the gangster turned developer allegedly remains absconding, Mumbai Police Commissioner Arup Patnaik has transferred a case of assault and extortion filed against Naik by a BMC contractor to the Crime Branch. MiD DAY had reported the incident yesterday (‘Ashwin Naik booked for assaulting BMC contractor’). Dhiraj Gohil, the victim, had also claimed that NM Joshi Marg police had delayed lodging an FIR, complying only after directions from additional commissioner of police, central region, Vineet Agarwal. The cops had added sections of extortion against Naik only after the report appeared in MiD DAY.

Gohil was allegedly summoned to Naik’s office at Subhash Nagar, NM Joshi Marg on Friday and later beaten up by the latter’s aides. Cops only registered a non-cognisable complaint at first and even while registering an FIR, left out section 387 (extortion) of Indian Penal Code, which is a non-bailable offence.

“The commissioner of police is transferring the case from NM Joshi Marg police station to crime branch so that proper investigation is done in the matter,” said Gohil, who met the top cop yesterday. “We have registered sections of extortion against Ashwin Naik and his associates who also are wanted along with Gohil’s cousin sister Purnima Boricha,” said Vinod Kalekar, assistant police inspector of NM Joshi Marg police station.

However, cops did not arrest anybody till Monday, two days after registering an FIR. “Once we get the documents from NM Joshi Marg police station we will start investigating the case,” said a senior crime branch officer, adding, “We have not got any orders from the commissioner of police so far.”

Background
According to the victim, about a year ago he had shown Purnima a room at Saat Raasta, which she purchased for Rs 15 lakh. A few months later the room was demolished by BMC but the owner Ramesh Bansode rebuilt it and gave the possession to Purnima. Since the premises were in controversy, Purnima began pressurising Gohil to recover her money. Gohil assured to take the room off her hands and asked for two months to make the payment. Meanwhile, Bansode too promised Purnima that he would return her money. Gohil then suggested they settle the matter between themselves. But, after not getting her money for some time, Purnima allegedly approached Ashwin Naik who then called Gohil.u00a0
