Asian Games: HC to hear tomorrow plea of Taekwondo players

New Delhi: The Delhi High Court would tomorrow hear and pass orders on a plea seeking a direction to the Centre and the India Olympic Association to allow nine athletes and a coach to take part in Taekwondo events in the ongoing 17th Asian Games at Incheon, South Korea.

Nine Taekwondo players, including Saurav and Shiv Kumar and coach Prem Kumar, have been dropped by the IOA from the Indian contingent of athletes which have gone to South Korea. A bench of Justice Vibhu Bakhru has posted the plea, filed against the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports, IOA, Sports Authority of India and Taekwondo Federation of India on the issue, for hearing and orders tomorrow.

The plea filed by the father of one of the left-out athletes has sought a direction to the Centre and IOA "to give administrative approval" for the participation of the nine players in the Asian Games Taekwondo competition in their respective weight categories. The plea has also sought a direction to the IOA to release accredition cards to the athletes without any delay so that they and their coach may report at Incheon Korea on or before September 26.

"All of a sudden, the petitioner came under a great shock and dismay as it has been found that the names of only two athletes Ms Shreya Singh and Ms LatikaBhandariand one coach Shristi Singh, out of 11 atheletes and two coaches and one manager, have been approved ...," the plea said, adding the athletes "have been left out of the list of selected athletes for the 17th Asian Games 2014, being held in Incheon, South Korea, without any reason whatsoever."

"The petitioners, have cleared the trials held by the Respondent No. 4, and were sent to Iran for training at the expense of the state," it said, adding Taekwondo events will commence from September 30.
