Cops seize Rs 1.15 lakh in counterfeit currency from West Bengal based carriers

The men have been identified as Zakirual Hussain (29) and Mohammed Islam Sheikh (23) of Malda district in West Bengal. Their accomplice Saddam Sheikh (20), however, went missing after the two were arrested.

Hussain and Sheikh were staying at the Hillman Lodge on Old Madras Road when they were arrested.

A senior police officer told this reporter that the men were salaried couriers for fake currency traffickers. "We will get a clearer picture after we arrest Saddam.

The arrested individuals could be part of a larger ISI network and Saddam could be an insignificant stooge," said the officer.

Officials said the men are from the Ananthpur and Bhavnagar villages close to the Indo-Bangla border.

Officials say it is likely that Saddam has crossed the border to Bangladesh by now.

However, Deputy Commissioner of Police (west) B Shivkumar, who is supervising the investigations, said it was premature to conclude that the case has inter-state ramifications.

"We can only confirm the details after we nab Saddam. This fake currency racket could be entirely run and managed by Indian players within the country.

It is also likely that the arrested men purchased the fake currency from some other gang," Shivkumar said.
